Dr. Licinio Manco | Toxicology & Forensic Science | Research Excellence Award

Researcher | University of Coimbra | Portugal

Dr. Licinio Manco is a senior researcher in biological anthropology and human genetics whose work focuses on the genetic and molecular basis of human variation in health and disease. His research spans hematological disorders, including red blood cell enzyme deficiencies and hemoglobinopathies, the genetics of complex diseases such as obesity, population genetics with emphasis on Y-chromosome diversity, and forensic and biomedical epigenetics, particularly DNA methylation–based age estimation. He has contributed extensively to the molecular characterization of inherited anemias, genetic modifiers of fetal hemoglobin, and the interaction between genetic variants, environment, and metabolic phenotypes. His multidisciplinary approach integrates population studies, molecular diagnostics, next-generation sequencing, and advanced PCR technologies, generating insights relevant to clinical genetics, evolutionary biology, and forensic science. Dr Manco has authored 85 peer-reviewed scientific documents, accumulating 1,417 citations, and holds an h-index of 19, reflecting sustained and influential contributions across human genetics, molecular hematology, and population-based research.
